Non-Profits we Support
Her Odyssey is possible because of community.
We are founded in the belief that communities supporting one another is crucial to growth and connection. As such we are proud to contribute 10% of our monthly income to organizations or individuals we know who are working in the populations among whom we travel and live.
We don’t have a lot so we like to give to community based, grassroots initiatives where even a few bucks goes a long way. Our focuses are generally on organizations and individuals working in education, with women or children, and in protecting and connecting with natural environments.
When these organizations are too small to have ratings on sites such as CharityWatch, our criteria are to establish connection with their work by knowing someone in the organization or having witnessed their effects.
These are a few of the organizations whose work we have seen afoot on this planet, in our population, and whom we are proud to support:
Fundana International– We learned of this organization through our friend and hero, Fafay. On our journey across South America the generosity and positive spirit of the Venezuelan people buoyed us. What they face now within their country is something most of us can never imagine and yet they persist. FUNDANA aims to provide comprehensive and preventive attention to children and adolescents under risk to their physical and/or emotional integrity, in situations where their rights are violated; to educate families to fulfill a sustaining function and to raise awareness among society about this social problem.
TiKay Haiti– Founded by one of Fidgit’s lady crushes, Dr. Megan Coffee, and run by locals, TiKay Haiti’s focus is stopping the spread of Tuberculosis and HIV while preventing the illness (and death) caused by Tuberculosis and HIV, focusing in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti.
Girls Education International– Another incredible organization founded by an inspiration and advisor to the journey, Lizzy Scully. Girl’s Education International’s mission is to expand and support educational opportunities for underserved females in remote and undeveloped regions of the world.
Get Out Stay Out– We believe in the life and earth changing practice of getting kids outside. Thus we are proud to give to Get Out Stay Out/Vamos Afuera, a grassroots, Central Coast nonprofit, that invites Indigenous Migrant youth to run, play, and discover themselves in the natural environment.
Adventure Scientist– Founded by one of our advisors and heroes, Gregg Treinish, we have been proud to contribute to a few projects and impressed by the work of Adventure Scientists, an organization who equips partners with data collected from the outdoors that are crucial to addressing environmental and human health challenges. By leveraging the skills of the outdoor adventure community we are able to gather difficult-to-obtain data at any scale, in any environment.
Continental Divide Trail Association– Directed by our friend and hero Teresa Martinez, the CDTC arose from ashes to become one of my favorite trail associations. I have seen first hand the many ways they provide support for the trail, the environment, hikers, and communities along the trails. It is a national non-profit working in partnership with the US Forest Service, National Park Service, and Bureau of Land Management to complete, promote and protect the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail.
Casa del Pastor– We were in a real pickle on a back road on the Baja Peninsula when Michael appeared and spent the rest of his birthday helping us. His sister, Lisa, has run this home supporting women and families on the peninsula and in the tradition of modern missionaries, her work subsists on your support.
Give & Surf– Don’t let the name fool you, this was one of the most invested, active, and down to earth non-profits we encountered in this region. We spent quite some time in Bocas del Toro, Panama working on our sea kayaking skills and this organization was at work in the indigenous and local community there in a big way. Their focus is education and they support many local efforts, such as one of our friends there working to teach a group of young women about self empowerment through rowing. Their mission is to provide sustainable empowerment to communities of Bocas del Toro, Panama, through education, self-determined community development, and positive respect of culture and traditions.
The Cycle Effect– Another one of our heroes, FaFay volunteers with this exceptional CO based organization focused on empowering young women through mountain biking to create brighter futures and build stronger communities.
Family & Intercultural Resource Center– The Non-Profit where Fidgit worked while saving up and planning the Her Odyssey endeavor. Through education and support, FIRC helps families [in Summit County, CO] make healthy choices and provide an environment for children to thrive. By strengthening families, we are strengthening the community.
Seeding Sovereignty– We became aware of this organization in the midst of the COVID-19 responses due to their mask program. They are an Indigenous womxn-led collective, works on behalf of our global community to shift social and environmental paradigms by dismantling colonial institutions and replacing them with Indigenous practices created in synchronicity with the land.
